Friday 21st November

NETTIE HORN is pleased to present the first UK solo exhibition by British artist Kate Street; featuring a selection of wall-based sculptures, the finale to her Little Death series, and a collection of botanical drawings.
Kate Street uses words, proverbs and mythologies as a starting point to create sculptures tinged with a tongue-in-cheek approach to language. The results are often sculptures, or rather assemblages, that consist of intricately crafted components tinged with sombre qualities. Street uses the form of the funeral wreath, constructed as a response to loss and sublimation, to explore the boundaries surrounding the dual aspect of her work – the associations created between the imagery and her search for meaning through communication and language.
Striking a balance between the theatrical and the absurd, her series Little Death - originating from the French term for orgasm “petite mort” - illustrates the way in which Street laces her work with parallels between ideas of death and the romantic. These carefully crafted floral tributes are intended to mark the demise of someone or something, paradoxically signifying an end, and yet building a monument to the departed. Reoccurring motifs such as flowers, birds, trinkets and hearts are used to symbolise and subvert typical ideas of romance – being at first glance a baroque and intricate object that on close inspection begins to play with our most basic insecurities and discomforts.
Street’s botanically themed drawings play on bizarre taxonomies and classifications, creating new hybrid forms that simultaneously recall anatomical studies and mutated Victorian etchings. The Orchis series, which evoke an ancient Greek belief that orchids sprung from the spilt semen of mating animals, once again illustrates Street’s interest in notions of desire, longing, and the absurdity that often accompanies it. These considered drawings, which can be read as a beautiful Memento mori, reflect once again parallels between nature and artifice.
Kate Street was born in 1979 and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2004. Past exhibitions include Darkness Visible at the Galway Arts Centre, Ireland; Et pendant ce temps… at NETTIE HORN, London; Sex & Witchcraft at Transition gallery, London; Wintry at Lounge gallery, London; the Celeste art prize, London; New Romantic at the Hospital Gallery, London.

This month Reggae Roast returns to East Village for another all day skankathon.
This time we are joined by another true DJ legend, the one and only DON LETTS!
Over the past 30 years "The Don" has firmly cemented his reputation in both the UK film and music worlds. Since then Mr Letts has been rocking shows across the globe sticking to his simple music philosophy of "All killer, no filler"
Come and see him for yourself, up close and personal alongside our residents Louis Slipperz, Moodie, Exel, Mark (Solution Sound) and Joe Lickshot.

We are not quite sure who was more excited, the sun or the
Gardeners, but both were truly spectacular at this years
Secret Garden party. We give huge thanks to the sunshine and
even larger praise to you, the most extraordinary collection of
humans that ever congregated in the fields of fair England.
So many people are asking to purchase 2009 tickets that we
thought it best to oblige. A limited number of discounted tickets
have been put on sale. They will disappear very quickly indeed,
so if you already know that there is only one place to be during
the last weekend of July, please buy one as quickly as your
finances allow.

Photos of this year's Secret Garden Party and an online census
can also be found above. Follow the link, peruse the photos and
let us know your veiws. We take no profit from the Secret Garden
Party, meaning all your cash needs to be spent each year– by
filling in the form we will have a better idea of where you
would like your pounds to go. Simple.
And if you needed any reassurance about the results of your
astounding efforts in creating the zeitgeist of The Secret Garden
Party, we included a few quotes from the startled journalists
who attended the Party…
"I was warned about the cold, hard shock of post-Glastonbury
reality but that ain't nothing compared to the post-Secret
Garden effect. When your Gardener feet finally touch the ground,
reality is downright over-rated" – Seatwave
"We start laughing, and for the next few hours, the giggles are
only broken up with open-mouthed wonder at the attention to
quirky detail or emphatic agreement that this has to be the
greatest
festival set-up ever. Ever." – Virtual Festivals
"Every festival has its eccentric and innovative moments, but
these were the bread and water of SGP. Spontaneity, innovation
and liberation were pillars of this festival." – The Fugitive Motel
"For those who have never heard of SGP, it really is, in my
totally unbiased opinion, the best festival in the UK today…
So much work goes into this wonderland. To see it is to love it.
Get yourself there next year" – Spoonfed
THANK YOU GARDENERS!!! You surpassed yourselves once again.
You are a magnificent bunch indeed.

Buttoned Down Disco
Saturday 18th October 2008 - 9pm till 3.30am at KOKO
KOKO, 1a Camden High Street, London NW1 7JE - Follow the bubbles!
Nearest Tube: Mornington Crescent
Well it's finally here - this Saturday night we celebrate the Buttoned Down Disco 6th Birthday Party at KOKO in Camden! Over the last six years we have racked up literally hundreds of parties in over 30 different London venues, before settling down into the wonderful palace that is KOKO. This Saturday night will be a celebration of all the indie rocking electro poppin' music we have been playing for the last few years, with loads of balloons, ace visuals, drinks deals - plus EIGHT KILOS of glitter for the glitter cannons! Spread the word and get ready for the party of the year!
We open the doors of KOKO at 9.00pm and entry is FREE until 10.00pm, then seven pounds after then. Last admission to the club will be at 2.00am. Entry is strictly invite-only, so either print copy of this invite, show this invite on your mobile phone, or wear a BDD badge. You can invite your friends along too, just make sure you copy your invite for each of them as well. Please make sure you also bring ID if you look young, as KOKO is a strictly over 18's venue. There are some great drinks promos on until midnight; selected bottled beers are just £2.20 and Wild Shooters are just £1.50 until 12am. And for all you smokers, there is a very pleasant tree outside the front doors which you are welcome to smoke under!
Music wise, I'll be playing an all night set in the main room, mashing up all of the best indie, electro and pop, plus a few old BDD anthems from the early days! The JD lounge will be hosted by My Ex-Boyfriends Records, so make sure you check out their room too. We'll also be giving out free birthday cake for the early arrivers, plus special limited BDD 6th birthday badges! Don't forget we are also having a "Chilled" party on the Sunday, at another Camden venue. The first person to email me the correct answer to this competition question will win a bottle of bubbly at KOKO - where are we holding our Buttoned Down Disco "Chilled" party on the Sunday? Clue, it's not KOKO. Good luck, and see you all on the dancefloor this Saturday night!

Hijacking Matter – London’s new so-cool-it-hurts party hot-spot – the final touches are being put to it’s body kinetic dancefloor and 360° visual experience, as we speak, and with the purchase of this ticket, you are invited.
Like the party pied pipers that Diesel are, not satisfied with the party’s visual wizardry, there’ll also be exclusive musical collaborations on the night. Rave DJs will get into bed with indie bands; hip hop rappers will rub shoulders with folk singers. Hillbilly boppers will shack up with bootycore mamas. All bases are covered: pop; crunk; indie; electro; dancehall; disco; rave; fast rap; soft rock and hard harp hip hop. Yes sir (or madam) this party’s gonna rock till bedtime. Plus all proceeds are going to the Livity youth charity so bust a guilt-free move on the dancefloor and give an extra little shake.

REGGAE ROAST
AT EAST VILLAGE
SUN 12TH OCT
This month Reggae Roast will be taking place at the fantastic East Village club and we are proud to announce a very special guest...
SIR DAVID "RAM JAM" RODIGAN!
For a quarter of a century, Rodigan has been the top dog in the ganja-scented, bass-heavy atmosphere of Britain's reggae dance-halls, where mighty sound-systems battle until dawn to bring the crowd to a frenzy. Hardcore Reggae fanatics flock to see the infamous "Sound Killer" perform in venues from Jamaica to Japan.
We are extremely privileged to have the UK Dancehall Don perform in such an intimate, bass heavy venue and this is set to be a killer event, where the ultimate UK veteran meets the new wave of Reggae Roast DJs. Rodigan will be taking to the decks from 8pm - 9.30pm.
Alongside Mr Rodigan, Reggae Roast DJs MOODIE, LOUIS SLIPPERZ and JOE LICKSHOT will be joined by J-STAR and his MC, HONEY BROWN who have taken time out from their current European tour to add an extra bit of heat to the dance. Joining them are the newly formed Re:Wind Sound partnership of DAVE HILL (Ballistic Bros) and Faith's STUART PATTERSON.
This is set to be a truly legendary night, showing the best in what British Reggae has to offer. As always at Reggae Roast, you can expect an exceptional atmosphere and a killer mix of Roots, Dub, Dancehall and Ska hosted by our very own all-star Singer/Mc line-up of ISHU & RAMON JUDAH.
There will also be an award winning, authentic Sunday Roast being served all day, so come down early and satisfy your belly before indulging in some heavyweight bass line action.
